Marwell Zoo

Yesterday, we took a rather short drive up to Marwell Zoo. I hadn't been since I was a little lad, and was nice to see how much had changed or stayed the same. Got some pretty decent pictures, but that's not surprising when you have some awesome subjects to photograph.

Here is my favourite from the day - It shows one of the snow leopards stretching after just waking from a little nap.

Password Generator Bookmarklet

I created this little bookmarklet a few days ago to instantly create a random 10 character password. It's pretty handy as I'm always needing to create a new secure password.

If you need it more secure, you can edit the character list in the str variable, and edit the length of the password via the for loop. In this version, I've stripped out characters that look alike as it's annoying when can't tell exactly what the character is.

javascript: (function () {
    var tmp = '';
    var str = '23456789abcdefghjkmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHJKMNPQRSTUVWXYZ';
    var len = str.length;
    for (var i = 0; i < 10; i++) {
        tmp += str[Math.floor(Math.random() * len)];
    }
    prompt('Your randomly generated password is:', tmp);
})()

To use it, simply drag the link below onto your browser toolbar, and then click it when you want to create a random password.

Rallye Sunseeker 2011

At the end of February 2011, a few friends and I went to spectate the Rallye Sunseeker in Dorset. I thought it was a good opportunity to bring out the camera and take some sweet shots. This was my first attempt at motor sport photography and I think I got some alright photos, and definitely learnt a lot so hopefully next time I will do a much better job.

This is my favorite shot from the day, it just so happens to be the rally winner David Bogie in his Mitsubishi Lancer EVO IX.

Flickr and Youtube Bookmarklet

Here is a little bookmarklet I created to grab the short URL when viewing a video on YouTube or a photo on Flickr:

javascript: (function () {
    var a = location.host;
    if (a.indexOf('flickr') > 0) {
        var a = document.getElementsByTagName('html')[0].innerHTML;
        var b = a.match('http://flic.kr/p/([_a-zA-Z0-9]*)');
        if (b) prompt('The flic.kr URL is:', b[0]);
    }
    if (a.indexOf('youtube') > 0) {
        var a = document.getElementsByTagName('link');
        for (var i in a) {
            var b = a[i];
            if (b.getAttribute('rel') == 'shortlink') prompt('The youtu.be URL is:', b.getAttribute('href'));
        }
    }
})()

To use it, simply drag the link below onto your browser toolbar, and then click it when viewing a video or photo.

Tuesday's Coming

Welcome to Tuesday's Coming - a blog by me, Jamie Bicknell. Over the next months (and hopefully years) I'm gonna be posting here, whether it be some photos I've taken, something I'm currently working on, or maybe even the odd code snippet. I've been getting more into photography lately so hopefully it will be a showcase of some of the better photos I've taken.

Firstly let me explain the simple, Tumblr-esq design for this site. I'm a coder, and am pretty damn good at it, what I am not is a designer. I simply wanted to go back to basics and let the main attraction of the site be about the content. The idea is that once I start adding some content, I can tweak the design and build it up over time.

I originally designed this to be used within Tumblr, but got put off by the amount of problems they've been having recently with downtime. To be fair, Tumblr offer a free service so I don't think it's fair to moan at them, but it was easier for me to build my own blog engine, which I then have more control over.

Here are a few details about the site:

  • Custom built PHP backend using the awesome PHP Markdown for easily creating and editing the format of posts
  • Integrated with CloudApp, in conjunction with a custom short domain tues.co
  • Use of the Twitter, Flickr and Dribbble API to generate sidebar feeds
  • Use of the Flickr API to generate the Markdown code to embed a linked 500px image based on the URL of any Flickr page. More details on this can be found in this shot
  • Icon Sweets 2 for post information icons
  • Gedy Rivera's Social Media Icons

Hope you enjoy the site, feel free to hit me up on Twitter for whatever reason.
